94 th anniversary of Anafartalar victory observed
The 94th anniversary of the Anafartalar Victory, one of the turning points of the Battle of Canakkale, was celebrated yesterday with official ceremonies at the Gelibolu (Gallipoli) Peninsula National Historical Park in Canakkale, Marmara. The ceremonies at the Conkbayri (Chunuk Bair) area, the scene of the victory, started with a wreath being laid at the Atatürk memorial, a minute of silence, and the raising of the Turkish flag accompanied by the national anthem. Speaking at the ceremony, Staff Col. Adem Yüksel said the success of Anafartalar Group Commander Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey) at Canakkale paved the way for the War of Independence. A reenactment of the vicotry was also staged in the actual battle area, followed by a concert by the Gelibolu 2nd Army Corps Band. At Canakkale, when allied forces failed in Seddülbahir and Ariburnu, they opened a third front in Anafartalar, where Turkish troops under then Staff Col. Mustafa Kemal's command pushed an Allied force off the peak of Conkbayri with a bayonet offensive on August 10, 1915, sealing the Turkish victory
