Mevlut Cavusoglu, an Antalya deputy from the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) and the head of the Turkish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), was nominated yesterday by the European Democrat Group (EDG) to be PACE's new president. Under an agreement between the political groups represented in PACE, all members have pledged to vote for the EDG’s candidate in next January's elections. European Council sources say Cavusoglu’s election is certain, and would make him the first Turkish head of PACE.
