Speaking to reporters at the opening of the World Forum for Democracy in Strasbourg, France, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Monday that the situation in Syria has dramatically worsened, posing serious risks to the stability of Syria's neighbors and the entire region. Ban also warned that the tension along Turkish-Syrian border risked escalation of wider armed conflict in the region, as Turkish retaliated Sunday for the fifth consecutive day after several Syrian shells landed on Turkish soil. "The escalation of the conflict along the Syrian-Turkish border and the impact of the crisis on Lebanon are extremely dangerous. They show that this is a regional calamity with global ramifications," Ban added.
