The monument which has been built to commemorate Turkish diplomat Atilla Altikat who was killed in an armed assult by ASALA terrorist organization in 1982 was opened in Ottawa, Canada, in a ceremony attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and his Canadian counterpart John Baird. Speaking at the ceremony, Davutoglu said that Turkish citizens hold their heads high everywhere in the world, because a strong Turkey was standing behind them. "We are very good friends with Canadian foreign minister. He has been doing his best on the issue as well. We have put forth certain principles to make this visit possible. We hope things will get better. We don’t discriminate between our nationals here, either. Everybody coming from Turkey is our citizen and brother," said Davutoglu, urging everybody to open their hearts to people with Turkish origin. Davutoglu also opened the Toronto Consulate General and spoke with members of Turkish society.
