Death toll rises in earthquake zone

The 7.2-magnitude earthquake which has hit the eastern province of Van on Sunday destroyed a great many buildings in surrounding districts of Van, particularly Ercis, and wiped some villages off the map. The search and rescue work conducted by the Gendarmerie, Office of Civil Defense, Search and Rescue Organization (AKUT), Neighborhood Disaster Management (MAY) Association, volunteers, and hospital and government workers were accelerated amidst aftershocks and aid efforts in the region. The Prime Ministry's Disaster Management Presidency stated that 279 people lost their lives, 1,300 people were injured and 2,262 buildings were collapsed as of 17: 00 yesterday.
