Gul addresses Turkey-Portugal business forum

President Abdullah Gul and his Portugese counterpart Anibal Cavaco Silva on Tuesday participated in the closing session of the Turkey-Portugal Business Forum in Lisbon. Speaking at the forum, Gul invited Portuguese businesspeople and investors to benefit from the advantages offered by Turkish economy, which he also described as an important gate to new markets. "There is an environment in Turkey where Portuguese businesspeople can conduct business easily," Gul said. Referring to the pioneering role played by Portuguese sailors in the 15th and 16th centuries, Gul said that those courageous explorers have taken the first step of globalization in the world. Gul added that Turkish people were also very courageous to open up to the world and that the two countries should discover each other. For his part, Silva stressed the strategic importance of Turkey. Silva added that Turkey's economy has grown very much since 2002 and called on Portuguese businessmen to seize the opportunities Turkey is offering for them. Within the scope of his visit to Portugal, Gul received President of Lisbon Islam Community Abdul Magid Abdulkerim Vakil and former Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio earlier in the day.
