President Abdullah Gul arrived in Cairo, Egypt to attend an Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Cairo. Speaking to reporters at Esenboga Airport in Ankara prior to his departure on Tuesday, Gul underlined that the summit would enable the OIC to assume greater responsibilities and take initiative with a global vision and approach. Reiterating that he is the first foreign President to visit Egypt right after the revolution, Gul said that afterwards he met with President Morsi in Mecca and then invited him to Ankara, where the two leaders held meetings as well. "On the occasion of the visit, Turkey's strong support of the historical transitional period in Egypt will be reiterated, the relations between the peoples of the two countries based on a historically rooted friendship and fraternity will be examined. This official visit will serve to further the flourishing of excellent cooperation between the two countries in every sphere," Gul said, adding that they will review the cooperation activities in the Islamic world during the summit the theme of which is 'Muslim World: New Challenges and Expanding Opportunities’ and also assess the features that will shape the OIC of the future. Gul was greeted at his arrival in Cairo by his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Morsi as well as Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu who came earlier to the Egyptian capital for the OIC summit.
