Delivering a speech during a symposium on gender discrimination in Paris, Helene Flautre, Chair of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, gave an important message on the liberation of headscarf in public institutions, including the Parliament, in Turkey. Praising the latest change in the regulations as a positive development with regards to the representation of women in public and in business circles, Flautre claimed that it could help women to take greater part in politics. "26% of deputies in the French Parliament are women and %35 in the European Parliament, while this figure is 15% in the Turkish Parliament. The liberation of headscarf in the Turkish Parliament is a very promising development in terms of enhancing the representation of women in politics. Turkey can set an example to other countries with this development," Flautre noted.
