In Ankara, US Defense Sec'y Gates discusses greater military cooperation

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates over the weekend visited Ankara and held meetings with his Turkish counterpart Vecdi Gonul and Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Basbug, following a Friday NATO summit in İstanbul. Gates proposed exploring ways to increase cooperation between the two countries' armed forces States. Washington is also urging the northern Iraqi administration to do its part to curb activities of the terrorist PKK, he said. "I think what we're seeing is further intensification of cooperation in an effort to deal with the threat," he said.
