International condemnation against terrorist PKK attack

The PKK attack which occurred in the Cukurca district of southeastern province Hakkari and killed 24 soldiers yesterday was strongly condemned by the world. A statement by US President Barack Obama wrote, "The United States strongly condemns this morning's outrageous terrorist attack against Turkey, one of our closest and strongest allies. On behalf of the American people, I offer my condolences to the families of the victims and to all of the Turkish people." The statement added that the US would continue to strongly cooperate with the Turkish government, "as it works to defeat the terrorist threat from the PKK and to bring peace, stability and prosperity to all the people of southeast Turkey." US Ambassador to Ankara Francis Ricciardone also released a statement, stressing that no political cause or belief can legitimize terrorism and that the US will continue to support Turkey in its fight against the PKK, which is officially recognized as a terrorist organization by the US. Furthermore, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen strongly condemned the attack, stating that there is no justification for such acts of violence. He expressed his condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen, stressing that NATO allies stand in solidarity with Turkey in the fight against terrorism. Maja Kocijancic, spokesman of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, said that political purposes could never justify bloodshed and that the EU stood in solidarity with Turkey in such a difficult situation. French Foreign Ministry also called on the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) to put a distance between itself and terrorist PKK attacks. In addition, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-mun, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, German Greens Party Co-chair Claudia Roth and Iranian Embassy to Ankara condemned the attacks. Furthermore, British Prime Minister David Cameron stated that he was terrified by the news on attacks and deeply saddened by losses.
