Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu met with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy in Ankara yesterday. The tension between President of Alliance of Socialists & Democrats in the European Parliament Hannes Swoboda and Kılıcdaroglu, which was encountered Kilicdaroglu's Brussels visit last week, was not at the agenda in the meeting. During his meeting with Rompuy, Kilicdaroglu explained his party's attitude towards the Syria issue, new constitution and peace process. "We want peace and democracy in Syria. We don't defend al Assad's regime. Our party has proposed a conference like the one held in Geneva one and a half years ago. But Prime Minister opposed to it," said Kilicdaroglu. For his part, Rompuy said, "Actually your party is being misunderstood. I would like to thank you for changing this misunderstanding. Our remarks on Syria overlap."
