In a debate at the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, Giles Portman, the advisor to EU High Representative Catherine Ashton said the comparison between the protests that started at Gezi Park in Istanbul's Taksim and the Arab Spring would be misleading as there was a functioning democracy in Turkey and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had been elected three times by getting 50 percent of the vote. Furthermore, European Commissioner Stefan Fule's office has announced that Fule was set to meet with Erdogan, as well as Turkey's Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis and representatives from some non-governmental organizations as part of his visit to Turkey.
