Thousands in Istanbul break Ramadan Fast

Beyoğlu Municipality of Istanbul held a fast-breaking dinner in Taksim Square to mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan which was joined by hundreds of people. Preparations were made to feed around 500 people at the site. Beyoglu Mayor Ahmet Misbah Demircan said that a 20-year-old tradition was being upheld through the plans. Furthermore, fast-breaking events were organized by Eyup Municipality along the Golden Horn and by the Fatih Municipality in Sultanahmet to feed approximately 5,000 people in Istanbul. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz had the first fast-breaking meal of the year with mine workers in a tunnel 500 meters underground in the Soma district of Manisa.
