Turkish sculptors will create a statue of the mythical hero Hector in an Aegean city in Çanakkale province, said to be the site of the Trojan War. The artists’ sculpture of the Trojan War hero will be erected in Çanakkale’s Intepe district, the local mayor said yesterday. Intepe Mayor Alaaddin Ozkurnaz said the sculptors began their work July 8. “The sculpture will be completed within a month and will be located at the entrance of the district,” he said. “It is very important for us to have a permanent marble work of art about Hector, an Anatolian who we embrace as one of our own.” Ozkurnaz said the sculpture would be visible from vehicles passing by on the Izmir-Canakkale highway. “This is a first of its kind, so I hope that it will be a tourist magnet,” the mayor added. The marble sculpture will be three meters in height, but measure almost five meters high in total, including its base. In Greek mythology, Hector was a Trojan prince and the greatest fighter for Troy in the Trojan War. He was the son of Priam and Hecuba, a descendant of Dardanus, who lived under Mount Ida, and Tros, the founder of Troy. Hector led the Trojans and their allies in their defense of the city.
