After a mortar bomb fired from Syria killed two women and three children in the town of southeastern Akcakale on Wednesday, a Prime Ministry motion authorizing the government for a year to send Turkish troops abroad regarding Syria issue which was drafted at a late Wednesday meeting was discussed and approved in a closed session that lasted for nearly three and a half hours by the Turkish Parliamentary General Assembly. The motion says that the crisis in Syria negatively affected regional stability and security as well as Turkey's national security, adding, "Syrian armed forces have been conducting assaults as part of military operations onto Turkish land despite our several warnings and diplomatic overtures since Sept. 20, 2012. This situation threatens our national security. In this respect, the need for taking precautions and acting quickly against any threats to Turkey has arisen. In the framework of the situation, under Article 92 of the Turkish Constitution, we kindly ask Parliament to discuss a motion that authorizes the government for a year to send Turkish troops into foreign countries." Among 449 deputies present in Parliament, 320 voted in favor of the motion, and thus it was passed for a one-year mandate authorizing the military to use ground troops for cross-border military operations into Syria.
