German President Christian Wulff spoke on Turkey's EU membership bid recently during a visit to Italy, saying that EU members should hold up to their commitments regarding Turkey in accordance with the "pacta sunt servanda" (agreements must be kept) principle. Wulff reiterated that EU-member countries have unanimously decided to initiate membership talks with Turkey, requesting that the negotiation process with Turkey is carried out in a transparent and impartial way. In his speech, Wulff also stressed that Turkey was considered as an example of democracy to countries such as Egypt, Libya and Tunis.
