Davutoglu confers with Competitors for UN security council seat

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has telephoned his New Zealand and Spanish counterparts to tell them about Ankara's planned candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, officials said. Davutoglu confirmed last week that Turkey plans to seek a new, two-year Security Council term for 2015-2016. Spain and New Zealand also want one of the two seats available for the Western Europe and Others Group (WEOG), one of the UN's regional blocs. If no other candidate emerges in the group, Turkey, Spain and New Zealand will compete for one of the two seats. Turkey last held a Security Council seat for 2009-2010.
