Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said yesterday that it would be very good and natural if a Turk becomes managing director of International Monetary Fund (IMF). Simsek responded to questions at a TV program. Simsek said a gentleman’s agreement was made while establishing global financial architecture after Second World War, noting the United States decided for the World Bank President and Europe decided for the IMF Managing Director. "Time came for a change. Center of gravity in economy has shifted from the United States and Europe towards the east. Developing countries take more shares from the world economy today. Authority of those countries in the IMF and World Bank should also boost. Right to vote and quota of Turkey have risen in the IMF. Turkey has become a global economic and political actor. It will be very nice and natural if a Turk becomes IMF managing director. Turkey is the 6th biggest economy of Europe and the 16th biggest economy of the world. Our target is to become to be in the top 10 list in the world in 2023 and to be among the first three in Europe," he said.
