2.2 million people quit smoking in five years

Turkey is taking firm steps forward to become a smoke-free air zone. 2 million 200 thousand people quit smoking in the last five years in Turkey. In the first half of this year, cigarette consumption decreased by 10%, reaching 41 billion compared to the same period of the previous year. According to Tobacco and Alcohol Market Regulatory Authority (TAPDK), Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) run by Turkish Statistics Institute has been completed. According to the survey, 6 out of 10 people using tobacco products are thinking about quitting. The rate of those planning to quit within next month is found to be 12.9 per cent. Yet the rate of those planning to quit within next 12 months has risen up to 35.4 per cent. The rate of those using tobacco products has dropped from 47.9 per cent to 41.5 per cent among men, and from 15.2 per cent to 13.1 per cent among women.
