Arinc: "The US isn't aware of what's changed in Turkey"
The US is unaware of the changing conditions both in Turkey and the larger world, said Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc yesterday, reacting sharply to confidential remarks by US diplomats critical of Turkey released this week by online muckraker WikiLeaks. "Setting aside the world, the US isn't even aware of what's changed in Turkey ," he said. " Turkey is now a new nation, but the US ambassadors who serve in Ankara are clueless." He added, "Perhaps if (US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton) had denied or rejected (the leaked documents), we could be talking about other things today. But since she apologized, she confirmed that they exist. … Two American ambassadors who served in Ankara gathered intelligence on developments in Turkey . They made analyses in line with their own views and then sent out reports. Here I find two things regrettable: For one thing, their assessments, findings and analyses were all wrong. Second, they used terrible language to describe various individuals. There's nothing more natural than ambassadors telling their countries about goings-on in the country where they serve. But when they do that, they should send accurate information and not mislead their own country."
