Australian Governor-General meets with President Gul, PM Erdogan
President Abdullah Gul yesterday met with Australian Governor-General Quentin Bryce at the Cankaya Presidential Palace. Afterwards, Gul told a joint press conference how Turkey and Australia managed to establish a strong friendship though their soldiers fought on opposite sides during World War I. "History has seen so many events that caused enmity," he said. "The important thing is to carve strong friendly relations out of them, instead of passing down those enmities to future generations. And today, Turkey and Australia are the two best examples of that." For her part, Bryce said that when she visited Anitkabir, Ataturk's mausoleum, she was very moved to be able pay her respects to a very important leader not only for Turks but for the whole world. In related news, Bryce met with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and asked him to support special celebrations in 2015 marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Canakkale (Gallipoli).
