Speaking to reporters as part of his contacts in Japan, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan yesterday said that Europe was going through a tough period and many European countries lacked a government capable of taking bold steps necessary to solve those grave problems. Babacan described the current crisis suffered by Europe as an earthquake, saying, "It's impossible to prevent earthquakes. The entire world is influenced by the crisis in Europe. But Turkey considers the issue within the framework of strengthening the buildings to prevent any harm. We are now busy with strengthening the pillars, columns and foundation of our economy." Stating that further cooperation is needed in commercial relations between Turkey and Japan, Babacan said that Turkey would stand in solidarity with those who support and invest in Turkey and that a win-win relationship could be created between the two countries. "Japan is an important country in terms of its technology and finance markets as well. The energy, construction, finance, food and retail sectors of the two countries are important to both Japanese and Turkish companies. The companies from the two countries are currently implementing certain infrastructure projects in Iraq. But the economic relations are not on the desired level," said Babacan. In response to a question on Middle East and Palestinian issues, Babacan said that Turkey's position in the Middle East and Northern Africa was more effective than that of all the EU member countries.
