Britain's former Prime Minister thatcher dies
Britain's former Premier Margaret Thatcher died at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke on Monday. Known as the "Iron Lady", Thatcher was Britain's first and only woman prime minister who held the post from 1979 to 1990. Touching on Thatcher's death, daily Hurriyet's former correspondent in London Mihrisah Safa said yesterday that Thatcher was closely interested in Turkey. "In 1983, she visited Turkey on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Britain upon the invitation of our Embassy in Portland Place and shook hands and talked with hundreds of Turkish guests. At that time, Thatcher was a very young prime minister who has been serving for the last there years," Safa said, adding that she also attended the ceremonies marking the 75th anniversary of our Dardanelles victory. "She mentioned former Turkish President Turgut Ozal in his 913-page book titled ‘Downing Street Years' that she wrote after leaving her post as prime minister. She wrote in her book that she was impressed by Turkey's strategic importance," Safa noted.
