British defense sec'y: "Turkey is essential for our economy, security, politics and diplomacy"
Relations between Britain and Turkey are now enjoying a "golden age," according to British Defence Secretary Liam Fox. In a guest op-ed for Turkish daily Cumhuriyet, published to coincide with his visit to Turkey beginning today, Fox said he wants more cooperation between the Turkish and British defense forces, stressing the importance of the strategic partnership between the two countries. "Turkey is essential for our economy, security, politics and diplomacy," wrote Fox. "We have common security concerns. It's surprising that it's been eight years since a British defense secretary last visited Turkey when you consider the problems with Iran's nuclear programme, energy security and the Middle East peace process." Praising Turkey's role Turkey in NATO to provide for Europe's security, Fox reaffirmed Britain's support for Turkey's European Union bid, saying the EU can never be fully safe without Turkey's membership. "Britain will be the strongest supporter of Turkey's membership, and I will be telling my suspicious counterparts on every occasion that they lack foresight," he said. On Iran's nuclear ambitions, Fox wrote, "It will be a catastrophe if Iran makes nuclear weapons. We think Turkey shares our opinion. We have to continue imposing sanctions and like all of us, Turkey has to fulfill its international commitment and not let Iran take advantage of it."
