In Brussels for a NATO meeting, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu yesterday met with US Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke. During the meeting, the two top diplomats discussed Afghanistan and Afghan President Hamid Karzai's recently begun second term. For his part, Davutoglu said that Turkey places importance on the smooth operation of Afghanistan's political system and national consensus, adding that the country needs an economic action plan. Holbrooke reportedly said that the US appreciates Turkey's contributions to Afghanistan, but didn't press for more Turkish soldiers there. President Barack Obama announced this week that the US is sending more troops to Afghanistan.
