Health Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu met with representatives from leading pharmaceutical companies as part of the BIO International Convention 2013 in Chicago. Afterwards, Muezzinoglu made a statement in a press conference, announcing that a giant American company has decided to make investments in Turkey and that he wanted to see that accumulation of knowledge and technology is brought into Turkey. Stating that Turkey ranks the 16th in the world's pharmaceutical market and the 6th within the EU market, Muezzinoglu said that Turkey's share from worldwide pharmaceutical exports and biotechnological inventions was low. Underlining that biotechnology has been identified as a strategic investment field as part of the Health Strategy document, Muezzinoglu said, "If they considered Turkey as a strong, regional and stable actor addressing a population of approximately one billion people in its near geography, it would become a strategic point for their investments."
