After Turkey has formally asked on Wednesday NATO on Wednesday to deploy missile defense elements on its border with Syria to boost its air defense systems, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said that it would be a serious mistake if they were to refuse defensive support to a NATO member country in a moment when this member country feels that it is exposed to attacks from outside. Speaking for his part, US Department of State's spokesman Mark Toner said that the US was positive about Turkey’s request. Similarly, NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu said that all NATO members promised to respond positively to Turkey's request of Patriot missile. Furthermore, Foreign Minister of the Netherlands Frans Timmermans stated that he has sent an official letter to the Parliament, saying, "The deployment of missiles along Turkey-Syria border would enforce Turkey's air defense capacity which it utilizes to protect its people and territory. We also believe that the missiles would contribute to easing the tension in NATO's southeastern border. Thus, if the request is approved by the Cabinet, which I think it will be, the missiles will be stationed in Turkey."
