Nobel Peace Prize winner Karman calls on women to fight entire humanity
Tawakkul Karman, the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winner who is considered the iconic figure of the Yemeni uprising from 2011, has called on women to fight not only for their own rights, but also for entire humanity. Karman made a speech yesterday at Istanbul City University on her experiences with regard to human rights and Arab Spring, saying, "The women [from Yemen] who have been previously marginalized and isolated from society have fought for their honor and freedom within the framework of Arab Spring. They have fought not only for their own rights, but also for entire humanity. We have seen such examples in Tunisia, Libya, Syria and Yemen." Stating that particularly the youth and women should take action worldwide for their future, Karman said that societies should also have confidence in young people and women. Karman added that keeping silent corresponded to being a part of the problem.
