In local elections on Sunday, six ethnic Turkish candidates won seats in the Parliament of Germany's most populous state, North-Rhine Westphalia, the heartland of Turkish immigrants in the country. Their victories also marked a first in the history of the state, which has had no Turkish representatives in its Parliament before. Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) took second place in the election, which was taken as a sign of how the CDU is faring against the main opposition Social Democrats. The loss, a blow to Merkel little more than six months into her second term in office, likely means she will have to rely on opposition parties to deliver her policy agenda.
