The construction of Mersin Alakopru Dam aimed at addressing the drinking water issue in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has been continuing at a rapid pace. Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning has set off housing construction for the residents of Akine, Ormancik, Sariagac and Caltibuku villages that were submerged by dam waters. The villagers will also be granted a 4.5-decare land for strawberry cultivation. Environment and Urban Planning Minister Erdogan Bayraktar said that they have taken the demands of villagers into consideration for the housing construction and given some details on the project. The 60-hectare project includes 326 residences, 3 mosques with a capacity of 300 persons, a 16-classroom school and a treatment plant.
