UNESCO adds Turkey's Selimiye Mosque to its world heritage list
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) yesterday added Turkey's Selimiye Mosque and its complex, in the northwestern town of Edirne, to its World Heritage List. The World Heritage Committee, responsible for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, is made up elected representatives of 21 signatories to the convention. Commissioned by Sultan Selim II in the 16th century, the mosque and its complex – including madrasas (Islamic schools), a covered market, clock tower, outer courtyard and library – was considered by master architect Mimar Sinan to be his best work.
