German President Joachim Gauck received the relatives of victims, who were killed by the far right terrorist group "National Socialist Underground" between 2000 and 2007, at the Presidential Palace. Noting that all people living in that country should believe that the state will protect them, Gauck said, "It is not acceptable that people living in Germany for several generations are questioning whether they are really at home or whether they are safe. You trusted in our country and its institutions, but that trust was shaken. Even I am concerned by the mistakes made by some authorities. I wish to gain your trust again. I will be watching if the authorities are investigating the incidents thoroughly," adding,   "I invited you here to see what you think and how you feel. As the president, I would like to promise you that I will do anything to ensure that this country of ours shall never forget what happened. You needed solidarity and support, but instead they suspected you. You were humiliated and isolated. Some of you saw your friends turning away from you. Some of you lost your jobs and homes. Most important of all, you lost the confidence you needed to cope with life."
