President Abdullah Gul yesterday hosted the promotion meeting of "The Great Seljuk Heritage" Project at the Cankaya Presidential Palace and then responded to queries from the press about the agenda. Calling on the protestors to end the demonstrations, Gul stated that these demonstrations have begun to damage peace throughout the nation and negatively influence the economy. "The events that happen on the streets at nights, they should end now. These will eventually disturb the peace. Nobody really notices this, but these events have caused great damage to the economy. As I have said the first day [of the protests], there is this image of the Great Turkey, for which we all struggled. We should protect this image in all aspects," Gul said.  Touching on recent developments regarding government plans to regulate the social media, Gul said provocative messages spreading false news to agitate people were unacceptable. "Just as you can't do that in a newspaper, you can't do that on social media either. But Turkey should not fall behind European legislation in any new regulation," Gul added.
