Turkey's Ministry of Environment and Urbanization is carrying out a research aimed at analyzing all the environmental risk factors involved at the Akkuyu nuclear power plant to be constructed in the southern city of Mersin. All the risk factors including tsunami and an external attack are being examined. Ten ministries including the Ministry of Defense, four universities and a wide range of non-governmental organizations are participating in the research commission. As a part of the environmental impact report (CED), flood risk in the region will be examined as well. The risk of an increase in sea water temperature to be used as a refrigerant element for the plant, as well as its impacts on tourism will also be determined.
