Clinton's visit widely covered by foreign press
The visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Turkey over the weekend has been widely covered by the US and British press. The New York Times indicated in a news story entitled "US and Turkey to Tighten Coordination in Syria" that "Turkey and the United States agreed Saturday to accelerate preparations for the possible fall of Syria's president, Bashar al-Assad, creating a formal bilateral team to manage helping the opposition, providing aid to fleeing refugees and planning for worst-case outcomes that include a chemical weapons attack." Furthermore, The Washington Post wrote, "The top US diplomat also pledged more military and intelligence cooperation with Turkey, a close U.S. ally now receiving a daily tide of refugees from the 17-month conflict." The Wall Street Journal wrote that Clinton's visit "was seen in Turkey as a reaffirmation of US support for Turkey's policy on Syria", adding, "The secretary of state also addressed Turkey's fears over the grown influence and activities of the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party, the PKK." As indicated by the Guardian, "The United States and Turkey are considering imposing no-fly zones and other steps on Syria to help rebel forces, Hillary Clinton has announced." The daily added, "The imposition of no-fly zones by foreign powers were crucial in helping Libyan rebels overthrow Muammar Gaddafi last year."
