Cyprus peace talks entering critical phase
The Cyprus issue is set today to enter its one of the most critical phases. As part of the ongoing comprehensive peace negotiations on the island, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias will proceed to intensified negotiations. During three days of negotiations at the official residence of UN Special Cyprus Envoy Taye-Brook Zerihoun in the buffer zone, issues such as power sharing, the economy, the European Union, and property matters will be discussed. In a 10-article proposal made last week, Talat signaled compromise over the rotating presidency and election through direct weighted ballot. UN sources praised Talat's move as an expression of goodwill to solve the longstanding Cyprus issue.
