Elections bring more women to parliament
Although still below international norms, one of the positive developments of Sunday's elections is that it boosted the number of women parliamentarians by over half, from 50 to 78, and from 9 percent of Parliament to 14 percent. The number of women deputies from the Justice and Development (AK) Party rose from 30 to 45, while the number of main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) women deputies rose from 8 to 19. Three women Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) deputies were also elected, as well as 11 Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) women deputies.
