Members of the European Union should stop blocking Ankara's path to membership, British daily The Financial Times argued on Tuesday. In an editorial entitled "Turkish despair," the paper wrote, "No country has begun accession talks with the European Union and had its application rejected. Turkey could be forgiven for wondering if it will be the first." Saying that progress has ground to a halt in the five years since the EU voted unanimously to start Turkey's negotiations , the Times accused opponents of Turkish entry of using "every trick in the book" to stall it.
