Gul meets with Rohani
President Abdullah Gul met for the first time with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rohani as part of his program in New York on the occasion of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly, reiterating that Turkey and Iran must be in a close and constructive cooperation so that the humanitarian plight in Syria could be ended without further delay. During the meeting, the two leaders focused on such issues as cooperation aimed at resolution of the existing regional problems including the crisis in Syria, current Turkish-Iranian bilateral relations and the significance for the two countries to mutually pay high level visits. According to diplomatic sources, Gul stated that a new period has started in Iran with the election of Rohani and Gul and Rohani have agreed to develop bilateral relations. Gul noted that the positive messages given by Rohani at the meeting would lead to the emergence of a constructive approach towards Iran in the international arena. According to sources, the atmosphere of the meeting was positive. The meeting was also attended by Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Development Minister Cevdet Yilmaz.
