President Abdullah Gul yesterday praised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Mehmet Ali Talat in a message to the defeated incumbent following his defeat by Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu in the TRNC's weekend presidential elections. "Had the Greek Cypriot side, even a tiny bit, chosen to keep up with the responsibility that you have taken and the leadership that you have demonstrated, and had they displayed the necessary goodwill, a fair and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue, a common goal for all of us, would have been achieved as of today," Gul said in his message. "I believe it is important to underline your contributions to the national cause and the Turkish Cypriot people during your tenure as TRNC president. You have conducted comprehensive solution negotiations with a vision and determination for the past two years. Furthermore, your vision, efforts and leadership have clearly shown to the whole world that it is the Turkish side that seeks a solution to the Cyprus issue and works toward this end." Stating that the will of the Turkish Cypriots was reflected at the ballot box, Gul said, "Everyone is proud to have seen the democratic culture and understanding of the Turkish Cypriot people during the presidential elections." Talat's services as TRNC president will always be remembered with appreciation, Gul added.
