Outgoing Israeli Ambassador to Turkey, who is set to leave his post in September, said there was still chance to restore Turkish-Israeli ties, which were badly strained after the deadly May 31, 2010, attack. The Turkish government has repeatedly said that relations with Israel would not go back to normal unless the Israeli government makes a formal apology and pays redress to the families of the victims. Levy also told reporters that it was difficult politically for him to work in Turkey as relations had become strained, but that his decision to quit his job was made for personal reasons. Shortly before the Gaza flotilla raid, his tenure was extended for another year, and then extended again until September.
