Leaders express condolences and offer help to Turkey

A great many world leaders expressed condolences and offered help following the7.2-magnitude earthquake which hit the eastern province of Van in Turkey yesterday. A written statement by US President Barack Obama which was issued by the White House said, "We have been following reports of the earthquake in Turkey's eastern province of Van with great concern. On behalf of the American people, I express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims. Our thoughts and prayers are with the brave men and women who are working to bring assistance to this stricken region. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Turkish ally in this difficult time, and are ready to assist the Turkish authorities." French President Nicolas Sarkozy sent a message to Prime Minister, indicating that France was deeply saddened and concerned by tragic results of the earthquake and he would like to assure him and Turkish people that it shares the pain suffered by Turkey in these difficult times and stands in solidarity with Turkey. Sarkozy added that France was ready to offer all sorts of help which might be needed by Turkey. Greek Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinidis phoned his counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu and expressed condolences as well. The Greek Foreign Ministry stated that Lambrinidis also said to Davutoglu that the Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection was ready to extend all sorts of aid to Turkish authorities with regard to earthquake disaster. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan sent a message to his counterpart Abdullah Gul, expressing his condolences and stating that special Armenian teams were alarmed in order to reach the epicenter of earthquake as soon as possible. Furthermore, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called Gul to say that Russia shares Turkey’s pains and two airplanes full of aid materials will be sent to Turkey as well. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and European Council Chairman Van Rompuy also sent a message to offer condolences to the Turkish people and government.
