Hungarian President Pal Schmitt came to Turkey for an official visit as a guest of President Abdullah Gul by a scheduled flight of THY from Budapest to Istanbul. Schmitt told Turkish media on Monday that Hungary and Turkey will promote their cooperation against terrorism during his upcoming visit to Turkey by an agreement. Schmitt highlighted the importance of Turkey's preparations for a new constitution, which he said would boost Turkey's relations with the EU. Schmitt said Turkey is a "key strategic partner" of the EU in the fight against terrorism on the international level and praised Turkey's active participation in various multilateral counterterrorism organizations and efforts, including the newly launched Global Counterterrorism Forum. The president declared his full support for the European Commission's 2011 Enlargement Strategy, which includes the 2011 Progress Report on Turkey, adding that another important agenda item of his Turkey meeting will be problems concerning fundamental rights and the rule of law in Turkey.
