Parliament getting ready for a new constitution
As part of preparations for a new constitution, Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek held a meeting with 24 constitutional lawyers at the Parliament yesterday. Stating that the Constitution of 1982 was prepared and presented to referendum in an environment in which political parties weren't operating freely, Cicek said that although certain amendments were made on it for 7 times, its image as the constitution of military coup hasn't been erased yet. He said that the need for a new constitution was obvious even only to ensure that this psychological problem is solved and the constitution is adopted by people. Cicek said that there are great expectations about a new constitution in Turkey, adding that public has come to an agreement that a new constitution should be prepared with active participation of Parliament, political parties, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and academics, but that preparing a new constitution is a difficult process not only in Turkey, but also in the entire world.
