The Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) has recently discovered oil reserves in the southeastern provinces of Batman and Diyarbakir. TPAO and Anglo-French oil and gas company Perenco have been jointly conducting exploration activities at the Kedil 1 oilfield located near the Mava Mountains in Batman, but the drilling was suspended temporarily after Perenco had unilaterally decided to halt drilling activities. However, TPAO resumed drilling without Perenco and found oil after reaching a depth of 1,800 meters. The field is believed to have rich reserves, but they have to be shared with Perenco due to the company's partnership rights in the field. Also, another recent discovery at the South Kayakoy 7 oilfield located in the Hani district of Diyarbakir revealed that it is the highest quality petroleum to ever have been found in the country. The field was closed 15 years ago because it was believed to have run dry. Officials from the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry confirmed that drilling had resumed three months ago and that 200 barrels of oil are being produced daily, stating that more oil wells will be opened in the region.
