Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Dervis Eroglu and Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias yesterday resumed Cyprus reunification talks after a two-week break. The meeting took place in the buffer zone residence of Special UN Cyprus Envoy Lisa Buttenheim. The two Cypriot leaders were expected to discuss the issue of domestic security and the authority of the founding states to sign international agreements should an agreement be reached. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Eroglu and Christofias are set to have a tripartite meeting in Geneva next month, following up on one last November in New York and again in Geneva this January. Despite Ban's efforts, the talks are moving slowly, as the leaders of the two communities are reluctant to make concessions on sensitive issues such as property, territory and power-sharing.
