Center for Economic and Foreign Policy Studies (EDAM) Chairman Sinan Ulgen said yesterday that the contract signed with Russia for the construction of Akkuyu nuclear power plant offered a great economic advantage. "It could be seen that risks are significant, but controllable. But the way to carry out risk control should be discussed with non-governmental organizations and public administrators. A report consisting of assessments and suggestions about the implemented policies aimed at ensuring nuclear energy security in Turkey which was prepared under the coordination of Ulgen, along contributions from some professors was announced.  Professor Hasan Saygin said that wastes from nuclear power plants remained active for centuries and nuclear power plant accidents posed global threats against environmental and public health, but wastes to derive from Akkuyu nuclear power plant would be delivered to Russia. The report indicates that the mentioned project offers economic advantages, but poses controllable risks on security.
