The UN affiliated Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will reportedly be engaged in the eradication in the chemical weapons in Syria. To this end, Director General of the OPCW, Ambassador Ahmet Uzumcu, has welcomed the agreement on chemical weapons in Syria that was announced on 14 September following talks held in Geneva between the Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergey V. Lavrov, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. Uzumcu hopes that these agreements will facilitate the fulfillment of obligations by Syria pertaining to the Chemical Weapons Convention. Uzumcu will mainly head the team which will be in charge of the "detection, transport and destruction" of the chemical weapons. Following the decisions that are proposed to be taken by the Executive Council of the OPCW, necessary measures will be reportedly adopted to implement an accelerated programme to verify the complete destruction of Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles, production facilities and other relevant capabilities.
