Turkish brands and patents grow at record pace

Turkey has been the fourth fastest growing country for its number of new brands and patents, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) announced this week. According to WIPO's latest report, titled "World Intellectual Property Indicators," Turkey saw the fourth fastest growth worldwide in its number of new brands and patents in 2009-2011. The report said Turkey overtook the EU average on trademark applications and outscored the US and Germany on industrial design applications. WIPO's report shows that while the global economy continued to underperform, intellectual property (IP) filings worldwide kept growing strongly in 2011. It also found that China's patent office became the largest in the world, as measured by the number of patent applications received. China's State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) overtook the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in 2011 to become the largest patent office in the world, after having surpassed the Japan Patent Office (JPO) in 2010. The WIPO report provides a wide range of indicators covering various areas of intellectual property: patents, utility models, trademarks, industrial designs and microorganism and plant variety protection. It draws on data from national and regional IP offices, WIPO, the World Bank and UNESCO.
