Participating in the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York along with President Abdullah Gul, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu engaged in lengthy bilateral talks with his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif to discuss the Syrian crisis upon a meeting of the two delegations. Focusing on the critical role that United Nations Security Council should play on the Syria crisis, Davutoglu noted that the more it takes time to act on it, the more powerful Al-Qaeda related organizations become powerful. Davutoglu and Zarif also reportedly discussed Iran's nuclear standoff with the West and Tehran's nuclear talks with the P5+1, the UN Security Council permanent members plus Germany. Underlying the importance of fostering bilateral relations with Ankara and Tehran, Davutoglu invited Zarif to Turkey to discuss Syria and other regional problems in detail and to negotiate opportunities for active cooperation between the two countries.
